Why Genetically Engineered Food is Dangerous: New Report
Genetically Engineered Food ( GEF )
Genetically Engineered Food is also known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) scare the dickens out of me.
I wish there was a good way to know if what we purchase has Genetically Engineered Food or GMO’s in them. Right now I look for anything that says on the label that it is NOT a GEF or GMO. I want to share with you some information on GMO foods but feel inadequate to express some of the information myself. So I am sharing a report today that I found from Organic Consumers Association and the highlighted area is my emphasis. At the bottom of the post is the article source with more information and I encourage you to click on it and read more.
I hope you will find this informational and keep checking because I plan to share what I can about Genetically Engineered Food (GEF) and GMO foods.

Why Genetically Engineered Food is Dangerous: New Report
By Michael Antoniou, Claire Robinson and John Fagan

One of the report’s authors, Dr Michael Antoniou of King’s College London School of Medicine in the UK, uses genetic engineering for medical applications but warns against its use in developing crops for human food and animal feed.
Dr Antoniou said: “GM crops are promoted on the basis of ambitious claims – that they are safe to eat, environmentally beneficial, increase yields, reduce reliance on pesticides, and can help solve world hunger.
“I felt what was needed was a collation of the evidence that addresses the technology from a scientific point of view.
“Research studies show that genetically modified crops have harmful effects on laboratory animals in feeding trials and on the environment during cultivation. They have increased the use of pesticides and have failed to increase yields. Our report concludes that there are safer and more effective alternatives to meeting the world’s food needs.”
Another author of the report, Dr John Fagan, is a former genetic engineer who in 1994 returned to the National Institutes of Health $614,000 in grant money due to concerns about the safety and ethics of the technology. He subsequently founded a GMO testing company.
Dr Fagan said: “Crop genetic engineering as practiced today is a crude, imprecise, and outmoded technology. It can create unexpected toxins or allergens in foods and affect their nutritional value. Recent advances point to better ways of using our knowledge of genomics to improve food crops, that do not involve GM.
“Over 75% of all GM crops are engineered to tolerate being sprayed with herbicide. This has led to the spread of herbicide-resistant superweeds and has resulted in massively increased exposure of farmers and communities to these toxic chemicals. Epidemiological studies suggest a link between herbicide use and birth defects and cancer.

ORGANIC FOOD IS THE ONLY FOOD!!!!!!
md kennedy says
SUch a controversial topic, but I believe that GMO is BAD. Period. We do not need to play around with our food, just eat real local food in season. I just read a great article at http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_28778.cfm about boycotting factory farms, which are just as much a risk to our health and the Earth’s.
Kathy Idol says
Great reading. Thanks. I will be making changes.
Oralia Santiago says
More time should be spent on finding other alternatives to feed the world, however, sometimes it’s hard not to eat gmo free food since is its cheaper…
Chellesyvonne says
I can’t even fathom what genetically engineered food might do to our bodies. I was reading through the replies, and would like to see Jenni C’s pictures of the long term feeding trials. I hate that animals have to suffer!
michelle gilliland mcafee says
It is scary, the things we have been putting into our bodies and have no idea about. These GMO’s are not natural and not good for us. We have to start eating organic.
Eden Liu says
I feel like we shouldn’t eat or produce GMOs because we don’t know how much of an impact it is going to have on the environment in the future and it is not natural. God created these plants for a reason and if he wanted them to be a certain way, he would’ve created them that way.
Diana Slavova says
I plan changes in 2013, starting with my marital status.
Melissa S says
This news isn’t new to me either. It is scary, we grow a lot of our own food too. The labeling info in the comment section are helpful too. Does anyone know about labeling on seed packets? I know there are organic seed and nursery plant providers out there though.
Sherri Lewis says
GMO’s scare me to death. It is like these companies are playing mad scientist and humans are their guinea pigs……
Anna Marie M. says
This is not new to me. Anything that does not come from natural processing is dangerous. The effect may not be felt directly. Anyways, thanks for sharing this so may others know.
Mary Walker says
There is way too many scary things out there on the market. Eat this, don’t eat that. You just don’t know anymore.
Ella Bryant says
i HATE TO SAY I REALLY WASN’T AS CONCERNED ABOUT IT B/C IT WAS NOT IN MY FACE W/ INSTAT PROOF — BUT NOW THAT I HAVE A KID I REALLY AM trying to educate myself on the many effects of this food over time. good post 🙂
Kevin Linkie says
Thank you for sharing and spreading the news on GMO foods. From the first day I heard about GMO’s I haven’t felt right about it. I absolutely do not trust anything when it comes to big food corporations who have their hands tied into the government and vice versa. Lets simply face the truth for what it is. $$$$$$ all these companies care about is money and the bottom line. The stance that they will save the world from hunger and are good for us and the environment is just one big crock of Sh*t after another. Human’s simply are a piece of the pie in their game, guinea pigs and a paycheck.
Thanks for sharing. I am going to leave my few sentiments on this subject at that as I could go on about this nightmare all night.

I didnt even know there WAS such a thing as GMO. This just scared the beegeezuz outta me. I am going to look into this more. Thanks for the info. Shocking what they will allow us to eat/buy/sell.
Mary McCloy says
Thanks for sharing this info on GMO foods. I had no Idea and I plan on changing the way I eat
Lora Mccracken says
I wish I had known about the use of GMOs in our food when I was raising my kids. We all need to be more informed, especially parents with small children. There’s no telling how many health issues have been caused by a lifetime of eating processed foods.
Gina Johnson says
It’s nice to see that word is finally getting around about the different things used to process and grow our foods these days. I’m glad that we can spread the word with research to back it up. Thank you. Very interesting read.
Gina Johnson
Alison King says
This is pretty scary. I had no idea about any of this, to be honest, so thanks for posting.
Richard Hicks says
I don’t think enough research has been done to prove whether it is safe or not. I would rather them err on the side of safety.
Abbey Kathryn Good says
Natural is always the way to go!!
Elizabeth Parker says
Some countries have started enforcing label and even banning GMO and products containing them. Most people these day don’t know what they are eating and some could care less. :/
Colleen says
You are right Elizabeth! Europe won’t take GMO and here we are getting sicker in the USA
Jessica Barnett says
WoW! ALMOST LEAVES YOU SPEECHLESS. THE BIRTH DEFECTS AND CANCER ISSUE SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO WARN PEOPLE OFF IF NOTHING ELSE. I KNOW THAT EVERYTHING HAS RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS…BUT THIS, TO ME IS JUST PLAIN SCARY.
Charry says
I plan on changing a lot in 2013, starting with my family’s eating habits. Your site is a huge help, thank you so much!
sara russell says
Thanks for the info. I’ve just recently started looking into the dangers of this and how it relates to my kids having autism and gi problems.
Sylvia Ortiz says
This is the first I have ever heard about GMO foods and it’s dangers. Thanks for this informative post that makes us readers all aware of what to look for when shopping for groceries.
Deborah Hogue says
Just the words Genetically Engineered makes me want nothing to do with it. Either natural or nothing!
Shannon V says
When it is so clear that this type of thing and others such as hormone injections to animals has such a negative health impact why doesn’t the fda step in? Such things is whats wrong with people today. How many have to die before the gov. realizes this needs to end?!
LAMusing says
I was floored that in here in California a measure to require GM foods to be labeled did not pass! Just labeling! they could still sell their frankenproducts, but it would allow the consumer to know what they are buying. Sigh. Hopefully next time around.
Colleen says
I know I was trying to help promote the prop! I can’t believe CA voted it down
Kati says
Great article! My husband and I have just recently doing our own research into food after having our first child. We have cut out all fast foods and grocery items located in the center of the store–for the most part. Our trouble lies in the prices of organic foods. We are forced into buying crap food. I am sure theres a way to budget to make it work–and of course the benefits are priceless. Thanks for the info! 🙂
Michael Lambert says
I will be checking the foods we buy now. I never really paid attention and I wasn’t sure how to tell what was and what wasn’t. Thank you for the information.
Nicole M. says
I always make it a point to avoid GMOs while shopping. So so so bad for you!
Christina Strapp says
Thank you for sharing this!! I’m going to save this because it has a lot of great information. Also I appreciate what some of the posters have posted. I have become more aware of what we eat and even what we use since having my daughter. I try to feed her organic and healthier foods and I try to look for all natural lotions, shampoos, etc..
Vena Silverstein says
Very informative read. Glad I came across this and I will not be blinded to what is sold and just assume it’s safe.

I am also very scared about what hidden things are being put in our food. More and more I have begun to read labels and stuff you discover is very scary.
Annasue Lamphier says
This is an eye opening article. I have a lot of health issues and I believe part of them are related to eating foods with so many preservatives. Then eating antibiotic, steroid filled food probably hasn’t been a great thing for my body either. I am much more aware of what I eat and how I eat it. Thank you for the information.
Donna George says
I’ve been shouting this to the roof top for a while now. What are we doing by changing our food so much? Look what happened when we feed hormones to animals and then consume them. Early puberty on boys and girls.
Colleen says
there is alot of research out there that list which foods are genetically grown. I try to stay away from foods that are the top 3-5 GMO foods and look for labels that say they are “organic” because they are not GMO or labeled non-gmo.
Bonita English says
we have been trying to buy only from local farmers or grow our own do to all the added crap in the store bought stuff. we need to go back to the good old days.thanks for helping people aware of this
Colleen says
Thanks for sharing…we need to do more gardens….whether it be community plots, backyard, container or even small things in apartments.
bianca roman says
I can’t stop watching all those documentaries on Netflix! It’s like I want to watch them but get disgusted about a half hour into them you know? It’s sickening to know that they pretty much suck out the nutritional value of the food! I remember hearing them farmers were giving their cows candy because they couldn’t afford the corn meal or whatnot..like what is that!!! I’ve been trying to stay away from the bad food, but like many others, it seems to suck you in 🙁
great post!
Trent says
Thanks for the info! This is a very scary thing and I hope something is done about it in the future.
Jen Rodrigues says
This sounds scary but makes sense. No wonder people get sick or have so many problems. We have no idea what we are eating and what chemicals are used and such. I am glad my dad grows some fruits and veggies from home. He uses no chemicals or anything. Much healthier.
Cujo says
I have no fear of GMO foods. I have more fear of food-borne illness due to unsanitary conditions. Thanks for the article.
Lanie says
Thanks for sharing this. I commented on this previously, but I am going so again. I think more people should have this knowledge. I think people need to be aware of that goes into the food and how food is made. We have a right to know if something is being genetically modified. We still do not even know the harm it could do to our bodies.
Colleen says
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Lanie.
Angela Killingsworth says
GREAT REVIEW!!! I totally agree. As a parent we are especially called to buy natural whole foods.

i totally agree that gmo’s are a bad thing, and highly untested. thanks for writing about this!! i am definitely planning on starting a big backyard garden next year.. it is so important to educate people about the dangers of gmo’s for the future of the planet!!
Renski says
Thanks for sharing. I’ve always been wary of “franken-foods”. I hope we aren’t killing ourselves (and our kids) tryign to save a buck or two on our food …but it sounds that way.
BlackAsphodel says
Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know of this.
leann hanson says
That was scary, gross, and very disturbing.I’m kind of at a loss for words.I may never eat again. Why can’t organic food be cheaper?
Heather Swarthout says
I hear about the GMO’s from my husband’s family all the time, they are big on organic foods.. I never knew what side effects GMO’s can cause after consuming it for so long. Thank you for this report, I will book mark it so I can tell my husband about it!
Sarah says
I would like to see some hard data that supports the doctor’s claims. How many research studies are we talking about? Who conducted these studies? I just started learning about this in school this past semester and I am leery of taking their word for it without any supporting evidence, especially when this “report” was put out by an organization with such a vested interest. It is definitely an important topic that needs to be out and open for discussion, especially since such a large percentage of US crops are GMOs.
Dora J. Crow says
So many of my friends on FB have been telling me about the big brands that are currently using GMO foods. I guess I was just unaware, or chose to stick my head in the sand. I do not completely understand all the sneaky insidious ways they introduce these genetically modified foods into our homes. I know that in the past 20 or so years, that my family & friends have had so many more food borne illnesses, and strange hives, rashes, odd onsets of asthma attacks that we attribute to the food stuffs we partake of. It is frightening to think that there are scientists sitting in a lab dreaming up some way to clone an eggplant with some cells and/or excessive radiation to make them grow in complete darkness and without water, or dirt. I need to get more driven, and read more about this phenomenon, so as to be able to understand more, WHY they want to modify, HOW they do it, WHY are we not made aware of it on each and every label of food? Thanks. I appreciate your info. I am going to read more when i am not so sleepy. Dora
Colleen says
Thanks for your comments Dora. Yes do some research and you will be amazed at what you find.
Ted Kooper says
I personally have had health issues directly related to unhealthy foods and need to advocate for my well being but cannot do that if proper lableing is not mandatory.
Patti Foulk says
Good Blog post. Not enough correct information is accessible about this topic.
Sandy McFadden says
I did a great deal of research about this when I was diagnosed with my cancer over 27 years ago………..scary to think what can happen when things are used to genetically engineer our food sources.
Rayna Miller says
I dont like things that are genetically engineered or modified. There is always a risk with them. And thanks for posting this article, i’m gonna try to gather more info about this.
Yaroslav Vishnyak says
this could scare us… but certainly we should research more. one scientist said:
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” – (Marie Curie)
Colleen says
Well said! Yes don’t be scared…read labels and learn which foods are GMO and stay away from them unless they are organic.
Jessica Gibson says
Thanks for sharing. This was really good to know.
colleen boudreau says
This is great information, thank you.
Jody Cowan says
Wow that is so scarey! I had no idea! No wonder we have all these new diseases. I thought that would help with world hunger, but now, I hate the idea!
Angela Cash says
I am delighted to learn about the produce codes! I try to buy locally grown whenever possible from the farmers market or CSA.
Jessica Dunn says
I am scared of GMO food. It scares me to know what it could be doing to the kids and myself.
Kayce says
Its really scary to know that Genetically Engineered Food is dangerous. I was just wondering why the crop genetic engineering who practiced today are crude, imprecise and outmoded? Why they create unexpected toxins or allergens in foods that affect their nutritional value.
Luda says
Unfortunately not everyone can afford organic, we try to eat less meat and more grains and veggies, having your own garden helps also. Buying locally, from people you know and farmers market gives you some sort of security. Overall, we cannot escape everything, unless we make our own food from scratch which take some time. Everything that’s in the bag is processed.
Colleen says
You can get organic mixes and other mixes that are non gmo but you have to read labels.
Angel Diaz says
Awsome stuff is good to know things like this! help to live better the day to day
Thanks Zemanta good article
Aimee C says
This is scary, but then again..what today isnt?? I thank the lord my hubby works for a produce company and we get all organic….thanks for the heads up, disgusting.
Colleen says
Aimee C..you are so lucky to have access to good organic foods!
Christina Flores Pozzo says
WOW, what a huge eye opener, I will now begin to look for those products with labels staying it is not a GMO…. Thanks for the info
Jennifer Driskell says
Thanks for the good information!
Jennifer says
We’ve certainly made a mess of things over the past 100 years, haven’t we? With all the GMOs, partially hydrogenated oils, etc., it’s so hard to eat “normal” food. Allergies are at an all-time high, health care costs are sky-rocketing, and we are all about treating the symptoms and not always rooting out the source. It’s scary.
Ivory Ann Hudson says
This reminded of a clip I watched just the other day, some of you may have seen it. It was about an investigator filming people working in the butterball factory. Not once but they were caught twice on film, mistreating the turkey’s. So, you are probably right we don’t know what we are eating, and definitely need more information on the subject. It is a worry, not knowing what we are feeding our families!!! Thanks for the giveaway! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s to you and your family!
Anita Leibert says
This is very scary. It has gotten to the point where we need to be in fear of everything we eat these days. Thank you for sharing. I will pass this information onto my friends/family.
Michal D says
that is scary…..looks like it’s time to better look at what we’re eating…
Thanks for this great info 🙂
Shelbie Johnston says
GMO’s scare me as well. Years down the road people will realize the affects that they have on our bodies and those of our children. Thank you for helping to expose this to consumers who really have no idea what they are putting into their bodies!
Char says
This is definitely scary and NEEDS to be on food labels so we know where our food is coming from. This is one of the many reasons, among other things going into our food, that people are getting sick more with serious diseases and illnesses.
Valarie Lee Gentry says
I have not heard about GMO before this blog and now I’m scared! I will definitely be looking more into this GMO because I’m a worrying mother of one 9 year old girl and this really scares me! Thanks!
Colleen says
Don’t want to scare you or anyone..but show that we need to read labels and make wise choices.
Athena says
Wow definently something I didnt know about . Make you really rethink what foods you put in your mouth.. Thanks for the information….
Allyson Tice says
I am JUST learngin abotu GMO’s and what foods they are in and what they REALLY do to our bodies! Its horrible that these things are even allowed in our foods.. especilaly in our precious children’s food! I will continue to focus on getting rid of GMO foods that i feed my family.. thank you for great article this is VERY important info for everyone!
Wendy Elliott Lindsey says
There are a lot of us with kids who have autism, who believe gmo is responsible at least in part to our children’s disabilities… myself included.
Colleen says
Wendy, I tend to agree with your position 🙂
kyla whitley says
thank you so much for sharing this information! GMOs are scary stuff. the US is such a great nation, why can’t the powers that be, see what all this artificial stuff is doing to our nation? the almighty buck has a lot of power. so sad.
Rebecca W. says
Nothing is safe anymore. Food and otherwise.
solarride says
I watched a film, I forgot the title, if I am not mistaken Food, inc that the cow being fed genetically enginereed corn, so their meat, and milk become genetically enginereed too, mostly all of the food we buy in massive production plant is dangerous. Better start buying products in organic farms, even so not everything that labeled organic is actually safe.
Naznin Azeez says
I agree with you!. Genetically food is definitely dangerous. People think the nutritional value of such food is great but they are so wrong!
Helga says
I heard about the dangers of gmo’s in the eighties when I was working on an organic farm, this is awful news!
Denise Taylor-Dennis says
It was a real bummer when the GMO bill didn’t pass in California, I was really hoping it would have passed. It would have been nice to know what food contains GMOs and which ones don’t.
Colleen says
Denise, I was shocked CA couldn’t get that bill passed. I thought if any place could CA could.
Betty says
GMOs are everywhere it is hard to know what contains them.
javeriyasayeedsiddiqui says
Too much of technology is mostly harmful. Some compounds can go under chemical reaction and produce harmful and toxic substances, Natural living is the best option always.
PW says
In countries outside of the US and UK, there are even less strict laws about food, where it comes from and what happens to it before the food ends up on our plate. I’m curious to know what we can do as consumers to stop this from happening and getting adequate protection.
Colleen says
PW, well all I know is countries outside of the US won’t take GMO foods. They prohibit them.
So we are at the HUGE companies mercy until someone will stand up to them. But I hear Monsanto has so many in the government in their pocket…so it will be an uphill battle.
jules p says
this was an eye-opening post. it is so sad that our food is so poisoned. But as some has said, it is better to be safe than sorry. I will start paying more attention.
Michelle dement says
My son has celiac disease and after researching more about foods it’s not surprising that so many people have so many stomach problems and health issues. They have completely taken the good out of even food that is supposed to be healthy by over processing it and adding chemicals!
Tammi Bivans says
I say no to GMOS! The natural food that we have is much safer. It might not look as pretty or be as large, but I would rather be safe, than sorry.
Colleen says
amen Tammi
Kelly Arndt says
It cannot be a good thing to mess around too much with nature. The idea of what I must sometimes(ignorantly, of course)be feeding my children, scares me to the core… Thanks for the post.
Kelly Arndt.
Debra Holloway says
I live on a farm, and I will be growing most all of our food using organic techniques and heirloom seeds. I think that the technology used to produce these mass quanities of food are making the food dangerous for consumption, and creating many problems for farmers, such as with super weeds and the need to use strong pecticides. These also get into the drinking wells and water reserves.
stephanie rowe says
i read about this, and it is scary! i want to know where my food comes from, and they dont have to label it genetically engineered! i think they should have to!
Renee' Harris says
It is very scary! We need better, safer means for our food.
John Ray Pantaleon says
OMG, this information is creepy. then what are the foods that is safe to eat
Colleen says
John, You have to read labels like crazy and just be aware that the main GMO crops are sugar, corn and soy. There are others but if you can find products that are non gmo that use sugar, corn or soy you can avoid a lot.
krista grandstaff says
It terrifies me these things don’t need to be labeled, we’re not allowed to know what we are feeding our families…and no one has any idea the long term effects of any of this… we avoid processed foods, fast foods…you name it…just because we have no clue what businesses are including these or not…
Candis Binkley says
I feel that more thorough regulation and watch-keeping is needed for this type of venture. We may need to modify some foodstuff for future use but we need to strike a balance between what is safely feasible and just doing something because we can.
Natasha Brodsky says
We have tried to hard to protect our kids from GMOs but it turns out, they don’t have to tell us they use GMOs. I would love to see more articles on GMOs as you get them!
Colleen says
Natasha, I will bring what I find to my blog…
susan wiener says
My hubby and I are both not well and think eating organically would help but we don’t know the first thing about it, unfortunately.
Kami Dumis says
I have really been working this last year to eat cleaner for my health because I have so many health problems. I had no idea when I started how difficult that was. Everything is processed. And the few clean foods you can find here where I live are outregeously priced. Thankfully we have an excellentfarmers market that is great in the summer.
Danielle says
It is scary not knowing wat you are eating. I agree with the comment above about not being able to afford certain foods. I’m in that boat.
desiree says
i do not get any produce in sotre i get them at the market we have farmer market all round hrer and they sell the stuff cheaper and then they either gorwn inhot house or in controlled inviroment
Colleen says
desiree you are doing it right! Wish I had a market around the corner with fresh stuff.
connie hanson says
glad to finally read about this
ArcyEm says
This is positively frightening, and why I try to use heirloom seeds and grow much of the fresh vegetables we eat.
Linda Short says
I don’t want to use GMO’s either and buy a lot of fresh foods locally.
Jenni C Campbell says
I’ve been posting on FB about Monsanto and GMO’s for a while now—SO GLAD it’s finally out in the blog world and bigger!!!!!
Jennifer Johansen says
Thank you for sharing this. It’s really important to know about!
Holly Trudeau says
Definitely going to be more aware in my and my family’s food! Scary that it stays in your system so long, thanks for the info!
Megan Blumenthal says
Thanks for the info! Good to know. GMO’s are scary!
Tina says
This is a scary article. The use of GMO should be banned. Thanks so much for the information and thanks for all you do to try to keep people safe and informed.
Jennifer Boehme says
Thanks for the article, but when your poor you eat what you can when you can. I don’t like it, but till someone stops it what can you do except not eat. There are some things I don’t even care to eat that have this, so good for me I won’t even eat it let alone buy it.
Colleen says
Any step you take Jennifer will be a benefit to your body. Good for you for trying to select the better choice.
Michelle G says
We are trying very hard to eat whole foods but boy it gets expensive fast if you aren’t careful.
Vikki says
GMO’s are poison, and destroys our DNA, makes us sterile, and when it has human DNA like rice, it is Cannibalism when we eat it. Pork is bad, but people who eat it, are eating an animal that has been gentically alterted with human DNA, and they are unknowingly partaking in Cannibalism. Goats are being altered with spider DNA, and now human DNA. The corn is really bad. Potatoes have fish DNA, and strawberries, and tomatoes have spider DNA. Grains are bad for us anyway.
sue killgore says
That birth defects and cancer may be caused by herbicides should be enough to slow down or halt their use.
Nena Sinclair says
It’s scary, isn’t it? GMO foods should be banned! Most of the producers only care about the $$$ and not the consumer and the effects it has on them.
Colleen says
Nena, I agree GMO should be banned but if not that at least labeled…we have the right to know what we consume! And to think CA just rejected a proposition to label gmo foods.
terri says
Genetically modified anything is rather scary
Robin Quick says
Thanks for posting this. Im to am concerned at what genetically emgineered food is doing to our bodies. Its so scary to think about what we are consuming every day . Most of the time when you open a canned product you can smell the chemical & preservatives in it. Ive tried to start buying organic products when I can. I just wish I could afford to do it with every food item my family consumes.
Becky Kuntz says
I think this is a scary thing. Finding out about this is really not a good way to find out about what the food producing industry is doing. No wonder so many people have allergies to food and more and more develop these allergies every day! We need to find out what is going on and be aware of what we are putting into our bodies. If we think we are eating healthy vegetables and all we are doing is making ourselves ill, what is next?
Charissa says
I have concerns about GMOs as well, mainly that I have food allergies and if there are certain foods that are being genetically modified using other types of foods I’m severely allergic to, if that would cause anaphylaxis.
Tamar says
wow, I had no idea. Thanks for the report.
Leslie Galloway says
GMOs scare me as well, especially for my developing children to ingest. I still can’t believe that Prop 37 didn’t pass.
Carolyn H says
The scary thing about GMO foods is that nobody knows how these foods will react to our body once we eat them
Colleen says
Oh Carolyn, read this article..they are finding : http://myveganglutenfreelife.com/genetically-modified-genes-remain-inside-you-read-more/
Kylie says
That is a scary thing, we need to really analyze our future in the agricultural market.
Angela of Griffinshoney.com says
I only wish healthier food wasn’t so expensive….
JohnZ says
Monsanto just loves to find new things they can patent.
Glenda Cates says
This is something that I do not know enough about but after reading the post I have learned a lot and I will be looking into it some more so thanks for the post.
Emiela Bradford says
This is very informative. I must say that I knew nothing about this until reading your blog. Thank you for providing your input so that people like me can be aware of the things that are going on.
Colleen says
Thank you Emiela for taking the time to read my posts 🙂
lisa lo says
I use to write articles about this years ago on a website but folks thought I was nutz! So also, maybe this could be responsible for colony collapse disorder with bees?
Colleen says
lisa lo, Interesting thought about bee colony collapse. They are ingesting the pollen from the GMO plants!
Cristina says
Unless you buy only organic, whole foods and do not eat any pre-processed foods (anything from a box, frozen, canned, already cooked, etc.), there is no way to know if you are going to be getting something that has been GMO and/or exposed to chemicals. It is scary because autism rates are on the rise. While the thought is that it is multi-factorial in cause, I would suspect that environmental exposure, both to the child in utero and while developing, and to the parents genes plays a significant role in the rise in the rate of autistic spectrum disorders being diagnosed (and possibly other medical and/or developmental disorders that can be genetically linked). Continued studies need to be thoughtfully carried out before subjecting people to potentially devastating long-term consequences. It is one thing to create new colors of flowers or hardier plants by grafting. This is basically genetically engineering but through natural means, which allows nature to determine if the new modification is appropriate.
Colleen says
I agree Cristina, Really does make one wonder if autism and allergies are on the rise due to GMO products.
Jenny N says
I do not want to eat GMO foods but there is no choice when you are poor and can’t afford to make sure you are not. For this reason I do not think this problem is going to go away. There are to many of us that can’t afford anything else and the company knows this. I will not buy it if I know that its straight up a gmo food but I am sure my family is getting this in forms we don’t know about.
Ann Cluck says
Thank you for an informative and much needed review. We are creating monsters.
Michelle Proper says
Thank you so much for spreading the word Colleen. I try all the time to post info on GMO’s on my FB wall and it seems most people just don’t want to know or don’t realize the effect GMO’s can have on our health. I worry mostly about our young children who really have no say in what they eat. We need to educate the parents more so than anything and I hope & pray they pass that knowledge onto their children for future generations!
Colleen says
Many people I think don’t realize the depth and scope of distribution Monsanto has with using GMO seed for so many products we consume.
We just have to keep putting it out there.
Barrie says
I’ve been worried about GMO foods for quite a while!! Hard to always know what you are purchasing as it isn’t on the label…unless it’s a natural food that states NO GMO. Scary…
Shawna says
I am glad that you shared this info.
Jamie Steagall-Anderson says
Say no to GMO’s! It’s crazy to think that we are doing this to ourselves, or have been for so long. I’m glad I know now though, better late than never. Now I can focus on eating clean with my children, and rest assure that what they’re putting in their bodies is safe. I just wish it was easier to everyone to avoid the GMO’s…if the boxes and packages were labeled, a lot more people would join in on this lifestyle. Thanks for sharing your insight, and so many great facts.
Colleen says
CA just tried to pass an initiative to label GMO products and it was rejected. Go figure.
More people all through the US need to speak out.
Laura says
It is so scary and they wonder why there are so many diseases they cannot cure.
Tina Seagraves says
Glad to know people are taking notice. Great info..
denise smith says
i buy organic when i buy fruits and vegetables . i notice a differnce in my autistic daughter when we give her the organic fruit it is much better for everyone noone really knows what they are spraying on their fruit when we eat them if the fruit isnt organic so i want to make sure my whole family eats healthier
Colleen says
Denise I’m glad organic has helped your family!
Sara Campbell says
When I go to buy fruits and vegetables, I usually look at the numbers on the stickers. They will let you know if they are GMOs or not. I stay away from the five digit numbers that begin with an 8 since those are the ones genetically engineered. I also try to avoid the 4 digit ones that begin with a 3 or a 4 since they are not organic and were treated with chemicals. The five digit ones that begin with a 9 are organic and I try to buy those.
Colleen says
You are right Sara I have a post on the numbers on produce you can check it out here:
http://myveganglutenfreelife.com/the-little-sticky-plu-labels-on-fresh-produce-mean-its-either-gmo-or-not/
Shandi Naugle says
Wow. I guess I’m going to have to try to pay more attention to what I eat. Thanks for all the great information! 🙂
Rusu Alexandru says
Organic food in healty because contain only natural ingredients!
Janet Jackson says
I wonder if this is why people seem to have more food allergies and diseases today that in the past? scare stuff indeed! thanks for sharing!
Colleen says
I believe it is Janet.
Gina Reedy says
Definitely makes me think twice about genetically engineered food! Thanks for the warning! 🙂
kim lazor says
IGreat review! I will definitely share this information. It angers me that our own government allows profit to come before the health & safety of its own people. I am following this issue closely, and the more I learn about how we are being poisoned by GMO food, the more vocal I become about it. It is an issue that every single person needs to stand up and say NOT ANYMORE about, in my opinion. Forget just labeling this poisonous food! I will not be happy until these products, and farming practices are completely removed from the world…and our dinner plates. Thanks.
Colleen says
There are lots of groups you could join to help spread the GMO information kim!
Bella T. says
My fiance and I were just talking about this yesterday. We recently decided to start eating organic for this very reason. I really wish we could grow our own food like my aunt but we live in an apartment with four cats. lol
Colleen says
Bella..you can start small and do container planting in an apartment. I grow cukes and tomatoes in my home here in Alaska!
Lori B says
Makes you want to grow everything yourself just to know your family is healthy. I fear what may be in the future for our children and grandchildren.
Joni Mason says
II have long said GM foods are one reason our children are developing allergies and diseases.
My son, who is 23 now, contracted Metabolic Syndrome at age 11, which then turned into full blown Diabetes. HE also has Asthma, NONE of these are prevalent in our families!
Something HAS to be done to stop this!
Thank you SO much for sharing this!!!!!
Colleen says
Joni, I am so sorry to hear about your son. You have gone a long haul with this.
Monsanto needs to be stopped and more people need to be aware of what Monsanto is doing to the food chain with their GMO crops!
nikki krutz says
thank you for this information. i hadn’t heard much about this and its scary thinking how food i am eating and feeding my family could be harming us. i will pay attention to what we are eating now.
Chelle Thompson says
Anything genetically modified scares the heck out of me… I am not sure why they feel the need to do this to food. I know they are trying to figure out how to make more faster, more perfect, etc…. but I think the good old fashioned way of growing your own food the way it was meant to be grown is how it should be. This is exactly why we grow our own garden!
Colleen says
Save your seeds Chelle…soon there may not be “clean” untouched GMO seeds available!
Tina says
This is a great concern to me as my husband and I are not in the best of health so eating properly is so important. Thank you for the information
Colleen says
Look for organic or grass fed for foods. It will help you. And of course I personally believe eating less meat of all kind will benefit ones body.
Stephanie Phelps says
I had never heard of genetic engineering before and maybe that’s why we are so sick all the time. Thank you for bringing my attention to it. I am not sure if they are doing this beef but I have complained to my family for a year that beef just don’t taste the same and I get sick every time I have it. My family calls me crazy but it is true!
Colleen says
Stephanie, Well the animals are fed grains that have GMO and it trickles down to us in their meat! If you can afford to buy organic or grass fed beef that would be much better for you.
Rose says
Very informative and eye-opening. We need to be armed with knowledge, and not fear–become pro-active with our family’s health.
Bidisha Banerjee says
Great informative post. I avoid the genetically engineered foods. Most diseases are caused because of them.
Susan Slacky Faatz says
Oh my I had no idea and will start looking for the does not contain OCA’s on labels
Pamela Halligan says
Genetically engineered food scares me, too. I feel that many of our cancers and illnesses have been caused by genetic engineering.
Colleen says
Pamela, I totally agree 🙂
Wendy Mastin says
I work in a school system and there are so many more students now who need extra medication to be able to control their focusing. After reading the following, (Roundup, the herbicide that over 50% of all GM crops are engineered to tolerate, is not safe or benign as has been claimed but has been found to cause malformations (birth defects), reproductive problems, DNA damage, and cancer in test animals. Human epidemiological studies have found an association between Roundup exposure and miscarriage, birth defects, neurological development problems, DNA damage, and certain types of cancer.) it truly do feel that the food that we are eating is also affecting how our children are acting.
Colleen says
Yes Wendy! And how Monsanto gets away with this is beyond me!! It is criminal.
Terri says
Great post! It is very scary to think about what goes into our bodies
Kelly R. says
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge on this. This is quite scary indeed.
Dorothy Boucher says
its good to see the word is getting out about what they are doing to our crops , our animal feed.. I find this disgusting , they might as well take a bullet to all our heads……. when does it stop, this is why so many people today are sick, have skin problems, azma, and so many more things wrong, because there putting chemicals into our foods……………wake up peep
Colleen says
Dorothy,
Thanks for your comments! I couldn’t agree more! Increasing illnesses I think too are due to GMO ingested food.
silvergirl says
Thank you for posting this article. I just encounter this information about the GMO, its so scary!! we should be aware of what we eat..this is an eye opening for everyone.
Anne C says
Genetically Engineered sounds scary. May it be humans, animals, or food.
Ashley Morrow says
Thanks for posting this article. Most times the cheapest food in stores is genetically engineered. Many families don’t have a lot of options. Now that I’m older I am more aware of this, and try to buy organic food.
Colleen says
Ashley, that is a problem but I know families that can get assistance from the government to use maybe they are called food coupons? But you can use them at farmers markets for fresh locally grown foods! Finally something the government has done something for the people!
GayAnn Wright says
Thank you for sharing this information. It really makes you want to only buy at farmers markets and especially not eat processed foods.
meegan whitford says
Thanks for sharing this I have heard about this but have not read up on it! I live in rural area and during summer and harvest seasons we buy from local farmers or grow ourselves.
Colleen says
meegan, that is the best way if we all could get local produce or better yet grow it ourselves.
Xara says
Thanks for sharing this. Most of us are not even aware of what we eat anymore…
Tracie Holbrook says
this stuff scares me but since moving out of the city i now have the awesome option of buying my produce and meats from local ranchers and farmers that do not genetically modify (or add colors and preservatives or hormones) their products.
Colleen says
Great Tracie! That is the way to purchase food if you can 🙂
darlene bohannon says
i am so glad you posted the information on gm foods, ive always thought that our food chain should not be messed with. what happened to good old whole and natural food ? i will read more labels now that i know the dangers.
Colleen says
Check out this post on labels showing produce that is gmo or not:
http://myveganglutenfreelife.com/the-little-sticky-plu-labels-on-fresh-produce-mean-its-either-gmo-or-not/
Kimberly Davis says
This is some scary stuff. Maybe that’s why people are so sickly today.
Marissa says
Thanks for sharing. Already heard about this. Scary.
cathy henatyszen says
just stopping by to wish everyone happy holidays!!!
I totally agree that GM foods are not good for us, we already have too much in this world that harm us, and then we make things on purpose that can…
go figure eh…
Colleen says
Thanks Cathy! I agree we need to be aware so we can make the right choices!
Cindy Heldmann says
I agree! We are learning more & more about the things we eat that are packaged or in cans or . Pratically poison! If we had only known earlier in life! What damage has already been done! I will definately watch what I’m eating!
Colleen says
Cindy, making choices now will still help. Our bodies are wonderfully made and if we give it the right fuel it can correct itself!
Nikki Garner says
Yikes!! I had NO idea!! I will start buying more organic & paying attention to labels from now on!
steph turmenne says
None of us want to think about the bad stuff that our food conrains but with all the recalls on natural products its hard to not think about it. I wil definately be checking labels more often now. I want my family safe and healthy
Kelly Lloyd says
WOW!! Thank you for this information! We must educate ourselves!!
Kimberly B says
It is so scarey when I think of what has been happening with our food and it seems that besides a few no one really cares. The big “companies” wallets get fatter and fatter and the government just shuts it’s eyes and looks the other way.
Lanie says
Thanks for sharing this. I think more people should have this knowledge. If people only knew half the stuff that goes into food they would rethink all the things they consume. It is scary that they feel they have to make frankenfood to save money or cut corners.
Christina Hampton Kline says
Thank you for the article. I heard a little bit about it before, but never really understood how bad it was! Makes you think!
Paul L says
This information should be more widely available. There have only been a handful of news articles and documentaries that I’ve come across and a lot of people are still unaware. Great post.
Colleen says
thanks Paul, I am trying to bring scientific literature so it is not just speculation that is presented but facts.
Chev Sopkin says
It scares me too! It’s so difficult to know what you are putting in your body these days. Labels are misleading, even on our natural foods! It makes me more nervous for my 3yr old son because I want to make sure I give him the most natural & healthy foods available. Thank you for your article. I will check back to see what updates you make in the future. I found it really interesting that Dr. Fagan returned grant money & started a GMO testing company! Sometimes your gut will lead you in directions you never really predict 🙂 Good for him!
Colleen says
Chev, thanks for your comments! My grandson now 4 1/2 has had issues since birth. Going organic a year ago helped some but so much of common things with soy, corn and grains are GMO and not posted. So we are testing more for my grandson.
My feeling is that alot of the problems in this country with allergies and increased cancers have been due to GMO products.
Tamie mcurray says
Thank you for such an informative info. This is actuallu a little scary.we
holly messana says
I am also very scared about what hidden things are being put in our food. More and more I have begun to read labels and stuff you discover is very scary.
Sandra says
It’s scary what the *food industry* is doing to us. We’re now reading up on growing our own food.
ThatNolenChick says
My oldest has been diagnosed with ADHD and the meds only work marginally well. I’ve been curious about changing his diet to see if that would help. Thanks for this information – it certainly is eye-opening and will help me make better decisions about what to feed my family.
Liz McComas says
Thank you for sharing this article. I’ve heard a lot of grumbling and outrage about genetically modified and engineered foods lately but didn’t understand a lot about it. This article helped change that. Now I understanding the grumbling and outrage!!
Charissa M. says
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this article. We all need to be more aware of what we are eating & make healthy choices. This was a very eye opening article that everyone should read. Thank You again!
Colleen says
Charissa, Your welcome glad you found this interesting!
Theresa Reed says
Thanks for sharing. Never knew about this.
kyla whitley says
there’s so much in the media/internet about health risks with the way foods are processed, it’s very overwhelming. thank you for sharing this article. 🙂
Saturday Sadie says
Thanks for posting such an informative article. Sure gives one a lot to think about.
Tawni McDaniel says
I am very glad I was directed to this site to read this article. Recently, my 18 year old daughter suddenly began to break out quite drastically. She was very sad and depressed and it got so bad, she would not leave her bedroom because she was ashamed and embarrassed. In her quest to get rid of her acne, she tried several different medications that were over the counter and we even went so far as to order Murad, Pro Active and even Dermalogica. None of these worked and even seem to irritate the problem more. We finally switched to all organic food and organic face cleansers. Immediately, we began to see a huge difference. Her face has cleared up and she feels better. Since eating organic and is a little more pricey but much, much better for you, I switched the entire family over to eating only organic. Everyone feels much better and our skin even looks more radiant. I really and truly believe that everything we need to keep us healthy, was provided for us when the earth was created and if we use it as it was intended, we definitely reap the benefits!
Michelle Proper says
Another thing Tawni…I recently read an article about the acne problem and large consumption of milk is also to be blamed. Worth looking into if she is a huge dairy fan.
Colleen says
Tawni,
It is scary..my grandson since birth has had issues…and he’s 4 1/2 now. They are doing more testing. My son has gone organic last year and that helps but it hasn’t gotten to the root of what is causing all the rashes for my grandson. I’ll be posting info on food and allergies soon.
Betsy Rubendall Barnes says
Very scary! We need better, safer means for our food 🙂
bella says
So scary,I always tell my husband the way the grow the food today it is so scary.Thank you
L. says
It is very scary. We need to invest in better, more healthy ways to grow food for us and our animals.
Anna Johnson says
I agree with amy , its scary and i try to avoid anything that has been tampered with to such extremes
Amy Richardson says
Genetically modified anything is rather scary. I don’t like to make a habit of ingesting something whose basic building blocks have been messed with in such a way.
Angie says
Glad to see people are reading this
Jenni C Campbell says
I am terrified of what GMO is doing to our bodies. I’ve been following and supporting the campaign in California for Prop 37 forcing companies to label GMO’s. What has kept me diligent over anything else is the fact that once an insect tries to ingest or feed on a GMO–it’s intestines explode. If that is a WAKE-UP call, what could be?!?!
One GREAT way to know whether your fresh produce or grains you’re buying is GMO, Organic, or Conventional— is pay attention to the 4 or 5 digit code on the little sticker. I ALWAYS check everything before I buy, and if in doubt, I’ll go somewhere else. Here is what to look for:
5 digit code beginning with a 9 = Organic (grown naturally; no chemicals)
4 digit code beginning with a 4 OR 3 = Conventional (grown with chemicals/pesticides)
5 digit code beginning with an 8 = GMO (grown unnaturally; genetically modified)
I have 2 different pictures I would love to email you for info. One shows the horrific (but IMPORTANT to see) first long-term study’s effects of consuming GMO’s on unfortunate lab critters. The other is a handy picture for the digit codes above. Hope this helps!
Michelle Proper says
Thank you for that info Jenni! I will write that down right on my coupon file so I can use it next time I go shopping. I’m trying so hard to stay away from anything GMO and I am also a strong advocate for labeling! I recently banned all Hershey products in my household thanks to them using GMO Sugar Beets here in the US but have taken them out of their products in the UK because the UK would not allow them. When is America’s consumers going to wake up and start demanding Labeling?!
Colleen says
Michelle, check out my post on labels: http://myveganglutenfreelife.com/the-little-sticky-plu-labels-on-fresh-produce-mean-its-either-gmo-or-not/
Colleen says
Jenni…did you read my post on labels? I have a post about that : http://myveganglutenfreelife.com/the-little-sticky-plu-labels-on-fresh-produce-mean-its-either-gmo-or-not/
Rust says
I am so glad to see this finally catching fire in the blog world and more people paying attention. We’re fed this stuff and so few people question it ….and cancer rates climb and health declines ….scary stuff.
