Making this delicious Baked Apples and Yams Recipe is so delicious! I absolutely love yams and Apples ,so what could be better than combining these fruits and tubers into this tempting Baked Apples and Yams Recipe?
Many people think that Sweet Potatoes and Yams are the same thing…but they are not! This recipe uses yams but I am sure that Sweet Potatoes would work just as well. BUT here is a bit of horticultural information about their difference:
Yams, Dioscoreaceae come from the Yam family and 95% come from Africa. They are closely related to lilies and grasses and are sweeter, starchier and drier in texture than Sweet Potatoes. They have a dark black bark-like skin and white, purple or reddish flesh. Yams are linked to various health benefits and may boost brain health, reduce inflammation, and improve blood sugar control.
Sweet Potatoes, Ipomoea batatas come from the Morning Glory Family and are more widely found in our grocery stores. Usually we find 2 types in our markets….a white thin one and a yellow/orange one. They are naturally anti-inflammatory. Sweet potatoes tend to have slightly fewer calories per serving than yams.
Now what WebMD says about apples:
Scientists also give apples credit for helping:
- Your lung strength
- Your heart
- With asthma
- Bone health
- Weight loss
- Your brain (easing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related memory loss)
- Your immune system
- Your gut health
You don’t need to be concerned about the sugar in apples. Although they have carbs that affect your blood sugar, these carbs are different from other sugars that strip away fiber that’s good for you.
