Gluten Free Onion Soup Mix

In my cooking I used Lipton’s Onion Soup Dry Mix for many many recipes but since I began eating gluten free, I cannot use it because there is controversy over if it contains gluten.   Here is a recipe for Better than Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix  that is gluten free & you can use it with confidence.  Celiac.com has this to say about the confusion over gluten in Lipton’s Onion Soup mix:

“There’s been some confusion as to whether Lipton’s Onion Soup mix contains gluten. Officially, Lipton’s lists the ingredients as: Onions (deyhydrated), salt, cornstarch, onion powder, sugar, corn syrup, hydrolyzed soy protein, caramel color, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, monosodium glutamate, yeast extract, natural flavors, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate.

However, some folks point out that the kosher version lists yeast extract from barley as an ingredient.

Others point out, as does the website for Unilver, which makes Lipton products, that Lipton Onion Soup mix is “made in a facility that also processes milk, eggs, soy, wheat, sesame and sulfites.”

So to be on the safe side many with gluten issues do not Use Lipton’s Onion Soup Dry Mix.   Instead the following recipe has been offered by Celiac.com and I have used it with great success.   I use Vegan beef powder and the taste is great.   I recently used vegan chicken powder in the recipe and it was delicious!   So try this recipe, I think you will be very happy with it!

Here’s a bit of information on the health benefits of dried onions used in this recipe from nutrition data!  Dehydrated onions are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. Dehydrated onions are also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Folate, Potassium and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.

Celery seed, which is the seed of the flowers of the celery plant, are also used in this recipe.  Did you know that the University of Maryland Medical Center has this to say about Celery Seed:

“Celery seed has been used as medicine for thousands of years in the Eastern world. During ancient times, Indian Ayurvedic medicine used celery seed to treat colds, flu, water retention, poor digestion, different types of arthritis, and certain diseases of the liver and spleen.

Today, celery seed is used mostly as a diuretic, meaning it helps your body eliminate water by increasing urine output. Celery seed is also used for:

  • Treating arthritis and gout
  • Helping reduce muscle spasms
  • Calming the nerves
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Lowering blood pressure

There are no human scientific studies that show whether celery seed helps treat these conditions or any others. Studies do show that celery seed acts as a mosquito repellent.

A few animal studies suggest that celery seed extracts may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as protect the liver from damaging substances such as high doses of the pain reliever acetaminophen (Tylenol). But again, researchers do not know whether those effects apply to humans.

Researchers have found that people who eat a diet rich in lutein, found in celery, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, oranges, carrots, and greens, were less likely to develop colorectal cancer. However, celery was just one part of their diet. So it could be celery, another food, or some combination of foods that lowered their risk of cancer.

Ingredients

  • cups dried minced onion
  • cup Vegan beef bouillon powder gluten-free Or if you eat meat regular beef bouillon
  • tablespoons onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon crushed celery seed
  • ½ teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container. About 5 tablespoons equals a single 1¼-ounce package of Lipton's mix.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, I use Liptons onion soup all the time for seasoning and then when my granddaughters developed problems with gluten I miss not having it to cook, I have printed and will also share with my son and daughter in law

  2. I avoid the soup mixes since I watch my sodium as well as gluten. I would just sub stevia for the sugar since I watch that as well. It’s more work to make all your own food but as least I know what I’m eating.

        1. There is a link under the recipe in the post for the Vegan Beef Bouillon powder. Just click it…it’s on Amazon. I mean if you eat meat then you can buy the normal beef bouillon and not have to look for vegan. There are many types of of boullion..click the link to the one in the recipe. If it’s not what you like check for other brands that are the type you like.

  10. I like your vegan option much better than the Lipton’s soup. I hate when boxed or can soups contain ingredients like sugar. They never tastes right to me. Leave the sugar for the candy or cake.

    1. I don’t use a lot of salt so if it is in my mixes I don’t mind. But I forget many have to cut back on salt!
