Do you want or need to lose some weight?
HELP, is what I have been screaming internally for years! It is really hard for me to lose weight. I don’t know if you are in the same boat as I am, but I hate to diet. With my history of teaching Complete Health Improvement Classes (CHIP), we teach that eating a vegan diet is the best way to lose weight and lower your cancer risk, lower your high cholesterol risk, lower your blood pressure, come off diabetic medications, get healthy and lose weight!
When I became vegan, I did lose an initial 30 pounds. I was ECSTATIC. But then I became stuck and just couldn’t seem to make a pound budge either way. I have been seeing a naturopath who has greatly helped me feel so much better finding that I was gluten intolerant. Eliminating gluten from my diet did NOT help me lose even a pound. I am was so frustrated.
So when my naturopath said they are offering a new weight loss program and would I like to try it, I thought WHY not? This program is called THRIVE. It is a high protein low carbohydrate diet that does not particularly cater to vegans. I was extremely reluctant to try this eating program. For one reason, it didn’t have a vegan “daily” menu and second, it is against everything I had been taught! Hi Protein is NOT the answer and Carbs are was what I was taught! But, I went into the appointment with an open mind. I researched Vegan Hi Protein, Low Carbohydrate diets and didn’t come up with much. However when I researched “thrive” I came across a couple of resources.
Before I go into the sources for THRIVE, first let me say that my naturopath and others in the clinic developed this plan called: THRIVE medical weight loss system. Their focus is to control the influence of a hormone called Insulin. Insulin is made by the pancreas in response to eating carbohydrates, which are mostly found in grains starchy vegetables, fruits, sugars and legumes. Insulin is needed to make sure we have the right amount of glucose in our body for fuel. However, when insulin levels increase in response to the about of carbohydrates we eat, our body shifts into a “storage mode” and starts depositing fat into fat cells. So this concept does go along with the CHIP teaching in that all types of sugars and simple carbohydrates produce huge surges of insulin causing a surge in a hormone called Cortisol! Ahhhh, now we are getting into why Cortisol is also so important. Cortisol slows metabolism over time and breaks down both muscle and bone in addition it is our stress hormone and accelerates aging.
So this comes back to eating healthy and lifestyle, Right? I must admit I have not watched my carbohydrate counts…I do eat breads, danishes, cereals and other types of carbohydrates that are “empty” calories. So I re-thought this High Protein, Low Carbohydrate business. Yes, I think it could be done eating Hi Protein, Low Carbohydrate and Vegan.
Now to my sources for Vegan Hi Protein Low Carbohydrate
I went online and found 2 sources that were particularly helpful. 1.) The first source is from The Lose Weight Diet. It basically is the old-fashioned counting calories diet. Calories in vs activity output = weight loss. That is true but I don’t want to have to count calories, although I will if I have to.
2.) The second plan I am blown away with…is written by Brendan Brazier called: Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life. You can buy it on Amazon in paperback or for your kindle. This plan does not specify calories but rather gives you a ration of energy-dense foods to eat. It recommends 45% fibrous vegetables; 20% legumes, seeds and pseudo grains; 20% fruit and 10% nuts, avocados and cold-pressed oils with 5% whole grains and starchy vegetables each day.
Purchase the book here:
Kindle edition here:
So I thought yes, I can do this. Brendan Brazier is a vegan and is a former professional Ironman Triathlete! So if he can eat high protein, low carbohydrate so can I using plant-based foods! I’m not trying to be superwoman, I just want to lose a few pounds. I suggest this article from Livestrong.com on the Thrive way of eating.
One Month Results on the THRIVE medical weight loss system

So…I am thrilled to share that I have been eating this way a month and have lost 13# and dropped one whole size! I have NOT felt hungry at all! And I eat alot! Of course the THRIVE medical weight loss system is a bit different from what Brendan Brazier recommends initially. But his book sure helps with vegan high protein recipes. If you are interested in the THRIVE medical weight loss system you can contact Avante Medical Center. This is a medically monitored program.
Did I mention I have not even begun an exercise program? It’s true and still I lost 13#. I can hardly wait to see what happens when I add cycling as my daily exercise. I will keep you posted on my progress.

I know I need to lose weight, but I want to lose it in the correct places. I need to lose in my stomach. After having a child, surgery, turning 40, and then going into early menapause (spelling), I have had a very hard time getting rid of the stomach weight. As of now, nothing seems to work, no matter what I eat, or how much, or even the exercises I do. It just doesn’t seem to go away.

Definitely want to lose at least one more size…I am currently in a 14 and will be happy to reach a nice healthy size twelve. I do not look healthy any smaller than that due to my large frame. Beverly Widdows says
Of course, I like many women, need to lose weight. I am faced with many health problems – one being a smoldering MRSA infection that is the result of a dr not wanting to admit he made a mistake & correct it. I hae discovered a diet on my own that is healthy & rpomotes weight loss for me, but I am not able to eat the needed foods as much as I need to due to nausea. Diet is a powerful tool in life.
Liz McComas says
I’m in a different situation than most I read here. I have severe PCOS and I can lose only around 10 pounds — AND NO MORE NO MATTER WHAT — unless I am on medications. I am FINALLY going to be able to afford to see my doctor regularly, though, so am gearing up for MY lifestyle change. I have been about 98% off meat for several months now. For me, it isn’t about beliefs and norms and such, it’s about taste. I can’t handle it anymore at all for some reason. But, what’s really really horrible is I hate vegetables lol. Like SERIOUSLY hate them. I have to be the most picky eater known to mankind (other than my grandpa). I’m going to check out this diet you mentioned … the vegan one. Though it sounds like TONS of vegetables, I think it’s time I learned to eat them and God-willing, learn to love them.
Michelle Carnaghi says
After having my son I’ve adjusted to the “Mommy figure” and realized I’m no longer a size zero and am finally comfortable with that! I would love to lose about 10lbs but as we all know with a busy lifestyle it just never works as planned.

I have recently started trying to loose weight. I put on over 80lbs due to getting pregnant. Now that the babies are walking around it seems a whole lot easier to get going than before. I really want to figure out a good balanced diet that will work for the family as a whole so I don’t have to cook different meals. I am totally looking into this program to see if it can give me a headstart.

I want and need to lose weight. I am diabetic (amongst many other metabolic problems) and I keep my sugars controlled ok, but I can’t seem to shake donuts, ice cream, snack cakes and bread. Oh, and potatoes. All the bad stuff. (Not that I am gorging on this all the time. I don’t eat a ton). I’ve lost a lot of weight since being diagnosed 7 years ago, but I have plateaued and am still very heavy.
Jeannette Laframboise says
I have often thought that I could easily be vegan as I seldom have or even want meat. I just have never really put it into practice. I was thin my entire life ( size 6-8) however when my thyroid was removed due to cancer, I gained 30 pounds within *8 weeks* with no change in eating habits or exercise. I never believed that thyroid had that much influence mostly because I felt people used it as an excuse for being overweight. I am here to say it certainly plays a much bigger role than I ever thought was possible. It truly was the most frustrating time in my life as I tried every single diet plan on the planet and never lost an ounce. After 6 years like this, I have pretty much given up that fight and accepted that I will stay overweight. Reading this though has me thinking that perhaps I may still be able to lose the weight. Perhaps I should look into THRIVE and see if I will find any success that way…thanks for the info!
kristina says
I need to lose about 60 pounds. I gained about 50 being on the Depo shot about 2 years ago and I lost a good 15-20 pounds, then I got pregnant and had my daughter 13 months ago and gained all the weight back plus a little extra. So now I am have a really hard time losing the weight, no matter what I do it just will not go away.
Cheryl Rahkonen says
I need to lose 100+ pounds. Two months ago I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. I started the gluten free diet and immediately lost 16 pounds and now I am stuck. I can’t seem to lose another ounce. I am not sure I could last on a completely vegan free diet as I can’t have legumes or any grains. But this book sounds very interesting and I would love to read it.
R.L. says
I’m a carboholic. I didn’t need to lose weight until I was 35…so it is hard to change my eating habits at this point. My weight hasn’t fluctuated…but I gained 80 pounds when I was on bedrest for my pregnancy (and my doctor had me on a 4,000 calorie diet, yes 4,000). Anyway…I am still maintaining…but now I need strategies to lose the weight! I get headaches and grumpy when I cut calories which is hard to manage with little ones at home.
Trista Prater says

Yes I need to lose some weight . I have done it before 30-40 lbs but after a few years gained it all back again. I just have to put myself in the “frame of mine” to do it again. If I do its so much easier for me to lose the weight.
Valesca D. says
I have a thyroid problem and it is difficult for me to lose weight. I take medication and workout at least 3-4 times per week. I’ve joined almost every weight loss program or tried every diet. It is a constant struggle. My heart goes out to everyone’s comment. My advice is to never quit. I am interested to know more about THRIVE and will look up information about it.

I do not need to lose weight, I was always underweight and just gain some in the last 2 years since I’m not working, so I’m happy with my weight. It is so awesome to see that there are options like this for vegans! I am not a vegan, and not sure if I ever could be by choice, but I do LOVE veggies of almost every kind, shape, way of cooking, etc. I have done the Atkin’s diet and had a lot of success with it (I lost 115 lbs in 13 months) but unfortunately I didn’t transition off of it the way that I should have and gained most of the weight back… I am going to do some research into the THRIVE diet and see how it compares and differs from Atkin’s because I found Atkin’s really easy to do and follow. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome post!

Congrats on loosing the weight by finding a good and healthy way to diet. My hormones affect my weight severly, i had lost most of the baby weight and within one month gained it back because of a cyst on my ovary. It was about 10 lbs, not a huge amount but for my body its getting close to being too much. Its all in my belly and makes me look like im pregnant again =/ I was pretty unmotivated but some bad new from my dr gave me some motivation to loose the weight. Ive lost 4 lbs which is slightly discouraging but im not excersizing so i cant expect too much. Good luck with the rest of your weight loss journey!

I’m happy with the weight I am as well as my current metabolic health. Although I’m neither vegetarian nor vegan, nor do I have issues with gluten, I simply choose not to eat processed foods or fast foods at all. I cook. At home. Heck, I can’t even remember the last time I ate out. Other people’s food (particularly restaurant food) is always so-o-o salty to me, anyway.
Interesting article. Thank you for sharing. Certainly gave me a few more things to think about for my family’s health and diet.

My friend is vegetarian, to a point…..she’s from S.Africa so she doesn’t eat red meats, just chicken or fish a couple times a month. She’s gotten me hooked on black beans and tofu lol! I love tofu on salad, mixed with potatoes and spinach, and even in a curry mix with veggies. She cooks for me one night a week on our class nights. Tofurky is amazing, too! I’m eating healthier, but not exercising as I should. I could lose about 20lbs to start. I’m tall so it’s kinda hidden, but I know it’s there lol!

I have read extensively on the relationship between insulin and weight problems. In fact, spikes in insulin rise can negatively affect so many things in our bodies! This is such an important thing to realize in this day and age when we rely so heavily on processed foods and simple carbs. Thank you so much for highlighting a very important health issue!

As a dietetic student, I have learned that a high protein, no carb diet is okay for a short time to lose weight, but after that is starts to put stress on your kidneys. The point of these types of diets is to put your body in a state of ketosis and this is to healthy to do long term. This is not to mention that your body starts to pull out calcium from your bones to get rid of the excess nitrogen from all the protein. However, a LOW carb diet can totally be done on a vegan diet and can even be super healthy if you’re eating things like what Brendan Brazier suggests (nuts, avocados, fruits, legumes etc). The best changes you can make are healthy ones that you can stick with in the long term so any weight you lose will stay off! 🙂
Denise Vandenbusch Bohman says
I could lose about 5 lbs. but my girls need to lose quite a bit of weight. They are both autistic and I can’t afford to go gluten free for them yet. It is too expensive for our limited income. I hope soon I can find a way to help them eat healthier.
Rebecca Reinwalt says
Unfortunately with my health issues and having a family that would not go without meat in their diet, I can’t afford to shop and fix individual meals for my family and one for myself. Trying to find a diet that would work for me, while affording the men in the family the meat and potatoes they require (figuratively) would cost an arm and a leg and between what my fiance’ makes as a teacher (about 36g a year after taxes and such) and me on disability (less than 10 g’s a year) we would end up further in debt than we are now. I wish there was a simple easy diet that a diabetic could follow without having to worry about blood sugar levels and my current medication regime wouldn’t interfere with. So in the meantime, I stay at 5’4″ and about 165#’s which I know is not healthy for me, as all my Dr’s tell me I need to loose weight. Exercise is out due to back and leg issues. So what’s a girl to do??

i really need to lose some weight….the doctor put me on neurontin and i have been starving ever since. yesterday was my birthday and i turned 46! do you have any suggestions as to what is better about being vegan????
Chev Sopkin says
First… Congratulations on losing 13lbs in one month; and *without* exercise! Sweet! I found this particular post VERY interesting because the High protein, low carb rings a huge bell with me; although I am not familiar with a vgan diet….YET! I have spent the last 14years doing low carb, high protein eating as a normal source of dietary eating off & on & for long periods at a time. It started after I put on a whopping 60lbs when I had my first son, now 14yrs old. I knew I needed to do something drastic & different, but something that I could also follow. I went on the Atkins diet & lost 74lbs in 13mos! i looked better than when I got pregnanat and felt fantastic! Over the years, I put on a few lbs & if I ever needed, I could just hit the low carb diet for 2wks & shed the weight fairly fast (about 10-15lbs in 2wks). I now have a 3yr old son & had back surgery for a herniated disc almost exactly a year ago (a year on Oct. 30th!) I was on bed rest for 2mos after & then it was a long process of healing & getting back to being able to walking normally again. It put me into a very deep bout of depression becaue it took me out of the daily routine of our family & had a huge effect on everyone with Momma out of commission. The major down time, coupled with the depression & the 20lbs or so of extra weight that I was still struggling to get off from my last pregnancy, led to a 35lb – 40lb weight problem that I;m currently struggling with. I have been tossing around the idea of trying a Vegan lifestyle for the last 2years or so now. I find this THRIVE program might be a good way to couple something I am already familiar with, and something I have been interested to try, in order to acheive the results that I am looking for! Thank you so much for this!

I’ve been a vegan for over 20 years and yet I still got ill. There are a lot of vegan products out on the market that are not good for you. I’ve since become a raw vegan eating only organic fresh foods. Being a vegan is a great way to lose weight while nourishing your body with quality foods. I will never change, I love being vegan. Thanks for sharing the different plans available.

congratulations on your weight loss. I was very overweight and had some major health issues. I had battled weight for years and finally had gastric bypass about 4 1/2 years ago. i lost 100 pounds and so far have been able to keep it off. I wish I could have lost the weight without surgery but after years of diet failure, I felt like it was what I needed to if I wanted to live a long life
Becky VanGinkel says
Congrats on your weight loss! I am currently pregnant, so after Baby Joe is born, sometime around March 5th, I will be starting a diet and exercising to lose my baby weight. I also plan on breast feeding to help. I have never dieted before so this is going to be a new challenge for me:)
Becky Bryant says
This review definitely gave me something to think about. I had gastic bypass surgery eight years ago and now the weight is creeping back on. It scares me to death. I wonder if this program would be safe for me.

I dont need to lose weight but my digestive system seems to be rotted out because I have the hardest time digesting hardly anything. I blame it on years of Diet Coke. I am trying to get 45 minutes on the treadmill 4 to 5 days a week. After about 2 weeks of a really strict diet and the extra exercise I am feeling better. I just worry because all it takes is one bite of the wrong thing and I will have weeks of misery.
Christina Kelbel says
I would love to lose some weight but I want to eat whatever I want and as much of it as I want and never have to exercise. That’s my ideal diet!
Liz Ticona says
thats amazing that you lost that much without any exercise programs yet. I believe it’d work too because my problem is carbs and if i have a diet like the thrive diet with low carbs, I’d lose weight as well. Losing weight has always been a challenge for me, especially after I had my son. I have started to incorporate the gluten free diet and I have been seeing results in a meaningful way. This is an awesome way to loose weight the right way, instead of going on a diet and cutting sugar out, because what happens when you start to incorporate the sugar back you tend to gain more weight than you lost in the beginning. It’s important to stay healthy if we want to live healthy lives and a healthy lifestyle.
Rebecca Hammock says
Looking to lose at least 20 pounds. Congratulations to you for losing so much weight. As much as I would like to do this diet, I don’t think I could go Gluten free. My stomach since a child has always been particular and with three kids and a husband to feed…I just don’t see myself sticking to it.

I have always found that I maintained or lost weight doing high protein low card diets in the past but I am trying to eat healthier and have put more vegetarian and vegan foods in my diet. My son is a vegetarian so I have learned to cook a lot of vegetarian dishes. I really would love to transition to this as a lifestyle. It sounds so much healthier to me. I will be researching and will let you know how I do. I am on a limited income so hopefully that will not hinder using this method of eating.
Sara Campbell says

Ashley says
I definitely need to lose weight and have really been in a lifelong struggle to achieve my weight and health goals. While I used to be strictly concerned with the being skinny / looks aspect of losing weight, I am now more concerned with being healthy and setting a good example for my son and other family members. After having my son, I started experiencing health problems such as Post Partum Depression and being tired constanly, aches and pains, etc. I did really well with Zumba, losing 20 pounds in two months and beginning to tone up. Once I moved back to the state my husband was stationed in due to his return from deployment, my health again got pushed to the back burner, and I began to lose all that I had worked for. I then ended up having some health issues that I still deal with that affected my ability to exercise, and I am now beginning to get back into exercising and hope to get where I was before. My main issue outside of exercise is food quality and price, since it seems so difficult to provide my family with a healthy diet while keeping inside our budget.

I need to lose a lot of weight – 60#. I cannot seem to budge it right now. I am limited in some of the exercises I can do. I do not believe in vegan, but I do believe in moderation in all things – red meat especially. I have some health issues and think my Stelara may be helping to hold onto the weight. I believe losing the weight would help with all the health issues I have and could develop. Thanks for the info.

I have had the hardest time losing weight after having my son. A lot of women have told me they had a much harder time losing weight after having a boy versus a girl and it seems to be that way for me too. I have about an extra 50 pounds!! I am trying to make sure that I eat a healthy lunch everyday instead of going out and getting something. I think the hardest thing for me is trying to find healthy meals that my family will eat.

I would love to lose about 40 lbs, every time I go on a diet I get really sick, which my health is not good anyway, I don’t eat that much, but I do like my carbs. It’s really hard for me to do very much exercise, I have neuropathy (not diabetic) and also fibromyalgia, and I know exercise is recommended for the fib. but my neuropathy with what causes me the most problems. If even walk very much, I end up suffering for several weeks. I hope things go well for you with your weight loss.

I need to loose 20 pounds assap. I had a steriod injection in my neck and the weight just appeared. I went from 115 to 140 almost overnight. I am out of work and I can’t afford new clothes. Also I’m 5’3. I look and feel better with the weight GONE!
Rebecca Reinwalt says
Steroids are known to affect ones entire body. The first thing you need to do is make an appointment with your PCP for a full workup to include blood to make sure the steroids have not caused you to become pre-diabetic/diabetic. I had one ESI (epidural steroid injection) in my neck in 2005 and the next thing I knew, I was in the hospital for a week after a bad reaction and now I am a diabetic and have been taking medication for it for 7 long years.
You could have many other conditions that caused your weight to balloon up, or it could be caused by any number of other reasons including medications that you might take that interact with the steroid… or on their own.

I was just asked to be a bridesmaid in my friends’ wedding in March, so I have 5 months to lose AT LEAST 20 pounds … and get rid of my farmer’s tan … so that I can ROCK the short, strapless dress she has picked out. With Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, I’ve had a really tough time keeping weight off. But I’m going to give it my best shot. Maybe THRIVE will work for me!

Jan Messali says
I was vegan for 6 years, and vegetarian for 17. I did not lose weight during this time… probably because I ate so many carbs. I’d love to lose some weight and I’m very interested in the program you mentioned. I need to do some more reading about it. Thanks!
Colleen says
Jan..I think being vegan has too much focus on carbs. I thought I’d die doing this. I must say I have been drinking vegan protein drinks…but that got very old so I added eggs and fish.
I will do that until I get to my goal weight then head back to being 100% vegan.
Lisa Jestes says
I do need to loose weight. I’ve been overweight most of my life. Im now 33 years old, and have been at a normal weight only twice in my life. As a kid, and once when I crash dieted for almost a year, which I believe caused me some health problems. I want to loose the weight, but just can’t seem to get into.
Bethany Fields says
Being a vegan must take such an incredible amount of discipline. My cousin has been vegetarian for years and just recently decided to go completely Vegan. He tells me all the things he can’t have any longer, and as picky as I am, I really think I would starve lol. Good work!

You wouldn’t starve! But it is a change.

Tammy Graham from LoveMy2Dogs says
You go girl!! I have lost 45 pounds since the first of April and I was contacted last month by my doctor about the CHIP program and I went to the info meeting and was very disappointed at the cost of the program. I was all set to do it until I found out the price then I was basically heart broken. I am really trying hard to eat a lot more plant based foods but I can never be vegan but I have cut way back on meats and dairy. I have switched to almond milk, which I absolutely love and only eat at a max of 4oz of meat per day but I love eggs to much to give them up. I may some day but for now…..it’s not gonna happen. Keep up the good work!!!
Colleen says
Tammy,
I teach CHIP! And most CHIP programs have a “special” rate for those who cannot afford to pay all. I know they have recently raised their prices too which is too bad.
But it is an easy way to lose weight. My problem was I relied too much on the carbs and after my initial drop in weight…I never could lose more. I am eating eggs & fish for my protein. So I can’t claim to be totally vegan right now. And to date I have lost #20.
Try cutting back on carbs. It does work.

congrats on the weight loss, I am so happy to see there is a way to eat and lose weight and not feel like I’m starving.
Jessie says
I have been trying to drop some weight for awhile now. Unfortunately, some of my choices did more damage then good – I ended up overloading my body with soy protein and I developed an allergy. The silver lining? I am eating healthier, and cleaner then ever and I have been dropping weight. The only downfall is I am still waiting to hear if I am allergic to anything else. I was on a primarily vegetarian diet, and I am missing many of the beans, nuts, and fruits that I was eating (I have been avoiding ones that are common allergens or similar in makeup to the soy bean).
Congratulations on your weight loss!! I am going to look into this program as it is similar to how I was eating before. Thank you for sharing it. I hope you see wonderful results once you add in some exercise. (I am planning on upping my activity to help melt off even more weight as well).
Colleen says
Thanks Jessie,
I hope you find something that will help you lose the weight. I’ve yo/yo’d all my life and craved so bad. I was hesitant to try this but I truly have been amazed how easy it has been and the cravings are not there.

Thank you Tanya! Good luck to you.

Thank you so much for this post. When I was vegan, I “lived” on carbs and my health and weight suffered as a result, which, unfortunately, scuttled my veganism. I am ordering Brendan Brazier’s book and sharing it with my vegan daughter and maybe we will both get back on track, physically.
